Murders in LA is an infographic campaign that aims to raise awareness of the increasing numbers of murders in the city of Los Angeles especially in the past two years. This campaign is supported by Stand For Safety, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles.
Stand For Safety is the non-profit organization I created from scratch for this project; its purpose is to inform and spread awareness of the constant risk and constant insecurity that characterize the society we live in nowadays. Safety should be the first priority for everybody as it is for the organization. In these sketches, I tried different layouts and illustrations to try to communicate the purpose of the NPO in the best possible way so that it could be clear and effective.
In the digital version of the logo for the NPO,I tried to focus on both safety and the idea of keeping people informed. I played with the black and dark blue colors and focused on the company's name. That is why this is just a typography logo without any symbol attached to it.
For the final version of the logo, I went for a bold typeface, combined the black and blue colors that go well together and decided to choose the centered one because I thought it would be much easier to read and would look much better on the posters.

In the sketches for the title treatment, I tried different versions of the idea of having the Los Angeles' skyline as the main element. Along the way I added some dripping blood to make the title treatment even more effective.
I made two digital versions of the title treatment; a solid black Los Angeles' skyline with the title Murders In LA underneath the illustration, then I made a version with the dripping blood and the Murders In LA displayed in a different way with a different font as well. The final choice has fallen on the version with the dripping blood because I think it is more visually captivating and more cohesive with the subject. I also turned the letter L into a gun and the made the letter A out of two knives combined together.

Data blocks is the first round of data visualization and the focus will be on showing the number of murders that occurred in the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 in the city of Los Angeles and its rise. The following are the data that I collected for this section plus a subcategory that shows the percentage of murders in relation to the pandemic which is 34%.
In 2019 255 murders were reported.
In 2020 the number of murders rose to 355.
In 2021 the number of murders reached 397.
In the sketches for the data block data visualization, I tried different ideas to represent the surging of murders. I utilized different weapons such as, rifles, knives and baseball bats, to see which one would be more appropriate for the topic.
For the digital version of the data blocks, I opted for a red background with a reduced opacity level in order to make everything more readable. Instead of regular bars I used rifles to show the increasing number of murders in the chart. For the final version of this portion of the project I ended up changing the background to a multiple blood splatters wall to make the whole thing look more cohesive and unique.
Data Circles is the second round of data visualization and the focus will be on showing the percentage of people who have been murdered in the past two years in the city of Los Angeles. The data will be based on the race, gender and income of the victims. A subcategory will be also present and show the kind of death they were victims of.
In the sketches for the circle data visualization, I tried different ideas to make the pie charts somehow unique and creative. The different sketches include pie charts with bright colors to indicate the categories along with death symbols inside of each of them; pie charts inside death symbols and pie charts in black and white.
For the digital version of the data circles, I first opted for a version with pie slices in bright colors, symbols of death inside each of them and an extra pie chart with a blood drop inside of it to represent the subcategory. For the final version of this section I changed the colors and went for black along with shades of red and grey.
Data Maps is the third round of data visualization and the focus will be on showing the five deadliest neighborhoods of Los Angeles and the percentage rates of victims in each of them. A subcategory will be showing the chance a person has to become a victim of crime if they decide to go to one of those areas of the city.
Neighborhoods:
Chinatown
Little Tokyo
South Park
Lincoln Heights
Leimert Park
In the sketches for the map data visualization, I drew the map of Los Angeles and highlighted the five neighborhoods taken into consideration. There is a map legend with different symbols either of death or danger that shows the specific areas.
For the digital version of the data maps,I traced the map of Los Angeles and colored with different shades of red each neighborhood that I took into consideration. In the map legend each neighborhood is represented by a blood splatter. The subcategory, a series of skulls, shows that a person that goes to one of those areas has a 1 in 15 chance of becoming a victim. For the final version, I filled the map of the city with solid dark grey so the neighborhoods would pop up more, and added a grey blood splatter to indicate the whole city.
The Advertising section of this project includes posters, instagram ads, and web banners; I went for these kind of advertisements because I believe they are the most effective ones to reach the goal of the campaign.
In the sketches for the advertising component, I was focusing on the informative part in order to communicate to the audience better and I made some posters and some instagram ads because I thought the project would get more visibility advertised that way.
For the first digital version of the posters I went for a light grey as background, the slongan at the top, the title treatment centered and underneath it the logo of the NPO and at the bottom I indicated where people can find further information on the subject. For the second version of the poster, I went for a very light blue background, I moved the logo of the NPO to the top left, the title treatment centered, the slogan right underneath it and at the bottom still stays the indication where to find further information on the subject.
Posters
For one of the digital version of the instagram ads, I decided to go for a bright red as background, part of the slogan above the title treatment which is centered, ad the other part right underneath it. For the second one, I went for the same background as the poster, title treatment centered and the slogan below it.
